Below is an extract from Mark Carter’s advice to the association of the passing of Russell Carter

I write to advise that my father Russell Haddon Carter, 454 Squadron dob 1/3/25 died earlier this afternoon at Killara Gardens Aged Care facility. Russell entered care on 27th May. He died peacefully following a relatively rapid period of decline.

He asked that the Squadron Association be informed.

I know that Russell valued the occasions of reunion and commemoration that you and your colleagues provided through the Squadron Association assemblies on ANZAC Day in recent years. In 2014, as acknowledged in your newsletter, Russell was unable to attend. In 2013 we did travel in to the city on ANZAC Day but miscommunication (perhaps attributable to our family’s lack of vigilance and our father’s encroaching dementia) meant that we were too late to participate in the appropriate segment of the March.

All the family were there in body and spirit with Russell on that occasion, as it turn out, the last.

I appreciate the efforts you and others make to commemorate the service of those who served in the Squadrons. Our father was a relatively young recruit, joining  in 1945 when the Squadron was stationed in northern Italy. Nevertheless the experience and fellowship, at an impressionable age, stayed with him for the rest of his life. He has written an account of his life that includes his time in the RAAF.
