Arriving at Berka to take over command on the evening of 2nd November 1944 was Wing Commander Charles Payne, another pre-war RAAF officer, he had been serving as a Flight Commander with 454 Squadron in Italy before his posting to No. 459 Squadron. He led the squadron until it disbanded in April 1945.
